Natural & Sustainable Hydrology Systems in the Detroit Metro Area

Managing stormwater and groundwater doesn’t have to be a constant battle. At Great Lakes Landscape Design, we install Ground Energy-Passive Systems (GEPS) to naturally manage water, just like Mother Nature intended.

This hydrology system provides a powerful, eco-conscious way to handle excess water using the natural gradient and absorption potential of your property. GEPS systems do not require maintenance and continue to deliver lasting results for the life of your landscape. If you’re ready to invest in a sustainable, effective, and hands-off drainage solution, contact Great Lakes Landscape Design today.

Great Lakes Hydrology Systems, a division of Great Lakes Landscape Design, is the only authorized installer of GEPS technology in Michigan.

How does it work?

hydrology

  • GEPS® is a system of multiple
units that passively balance moisture within the soil.
  • GEPS® is installed 2ft below the surface.
  • GEPS® is not drainage but solves the same problems drainage systems try to solve through natural/sustainable methods.
  • GEPS® is not hindered by obstacles
like clay pans due to it working volumetrically instead of just vertically.
  • In soils with low permeability (like clay), GEPS® promotes lateral moisture distribution between soil layers, overcoming vertical movement limitations.
  • GEPS® needs zero maintenance!
  • Material: Environmentally neutral polyethylene (MDPE)
  • Exelterra Boosters (BSTR) are just below the grounds surface in areas where the superficial soil is heavily compacted

Calculating Performance

  • GEPS® units achieve a recorded infiltration rate of 190 gal/hr./unit.
  • For GEPS® installations, this rate is adjusted to 50 gal/hr./unit, applying a safety factor of 3.8
  • This safety factor is applied for potential external factors that may influence the product's behavior, such as climate, environmental conditions, soil composition, and proximity to developed land.

The Benefits of a Natural & Sustainable Drainage System in Your Yard

Are you tired of your backyard flooding every time it rains? By installing a GEPS hydrology system, you get a natural drainage solution that doesn’t just redirect water but absorbs, filters, and diffuses it safely back into the environment. This eco-friendly process prevents pooling, reduces soil erosion, and supports healthier plant life throughout your yard. Homeowners also enjoy the added benefit of improved soil quality, all without having to install clunky grates or worrying about drain clogs.

  • Natural Management of Water: Our hydrology systems excel in absorbing and dispersing water slowly through subsurface layers, mirroring how nature handles rainfall and runoff. This reduces pooling, helps nourish nearby plant life, and eliminates surface water issues in your lawn and garden.

  • Energy-Free Operation: With no motors, pumps, or electronics, GEPS relies entirely on gravity and the passive movement of water through soil and rock. This means no increased energy bills, no risk of breakdowns, and no need for electricity to keep your system functioning effectively. You just get a drainage solution that keeps sustainability in mind.

  • Protection From Flood Damage: Metro Detroit homeowners are all too familiar with the challenges of flash floods and seasonal storms. Thankfully, GEPS is a natural drainage solution that guards against sudden water buildup and directs surface runoff safely away from foundations and living spaces, helping you avoid costly water damage and erosion.

  • Greater Soil Stability: By controlling the rate and direction of water absorption, our residential hydrology systems improve the structural integrity of soil. Over time, this results in reduced erosion and more consistent growing conditions for your landscaping.

  • Improved Landscape Irrigation: A GEPS installation enhances the moisture balance in your yard, ensuring that plants receive the right amount of water without drowning or drying out. This passive irrigation system is especially valuable during dry periods, as the system retains and redistributes stored moisture.

Whether your goal is to eliminate flooding, support a healthier lawn, or protect your hardscaping from pooling water, our hydrology system services are the ideal solution for your yard in the Detroit Metro area.

Our Hydrology System Installation Process

At Great Lakes Landscape Design, we don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every property has its own unique topography, soil type, and hydrological behavior. That’s why, whenever we perform hydrology system services, we always begin with a detailed site evaluation. We examine water movement patterns, identify problem areas, and determine where the Ground Energy-Passive System will perform most effectively.

Once we have a complete hydrological profile of your property, our engineers design a custom GEPS layout tailored to your needs. During the hydrology system installation process, our skilled technicians drill into the ground in a non-invasive manner to install the technology below the ground’s surface. When we’re done, you’ll have a fully integrated drainage system that is invisible to the eye but powerful in performance.

Want a Low-Maintenance Drainage Solution? Try GEPS

GEPS is a system that gets better with time because it requires no upkeep. That’s right: after installation, there’s nothing you need to do. Most drainage infrastructures require routine hydrology system maintenance: clearing pipes, checking for damage, and completing repairs. With GEPS, none of that applies.

These passive systems use nature’s principles of balance and flow to optimize water distribution underground. Over the course of five years, your GEPS installation will adjust to soil compaction, vegetation growth, and seasonal shifts to reach peak efficiency. Once matured, the system works indefinitely with no maintenance required, making it the ultimate drainage solution for homes in the Detroit Metro area.
